BBC Radio Sessions
Released today (30 April) is The Icicle Works live session, the third session from the upcoming BBC Radio Sessions Volume 2, from Beggars Arkive. Spanning decades from 1978 to 2000, each session has been remastered at Abbey Road and pressed to its own 12” clear vinyl record. These sessions capture the raw energy and unique spirit of BBC Radio's Peel Sessions, featuring exclusive recordings from bands on Beggars Banquet, Wiiija & Too Pure.
Formed in 1981 by singer-songwriter Ian McNabb, The Icicle Works emerged as key players in the vibrant Liverpool renaissance of the 1980s. The band released four records through Beggars Banquet, starting with their self-titled debut in 1984.
Known for their sweeping melodies and emotionally charged songwriting, they found chart success with enduring hits like “Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)” and “Love Is a Wonderful Colour", tracks that remain radio staples and are frequently featured in film and television.
Their third John Peel session, recorded in 1984, features fan favourite “Hollow Horse”, a live staple that showcased the band’s dynamic range and knack for anthemic hooks. The session captures The Icicle Works at a creative peak, blending post-punk edge with soaring, widescreen pop. A snapshot of a band helping to define the sound of their era.
